Dione Friends

Born and raised in Kansas City, Dione developed a strong desire to fight for social justice after witnessing racial, LGBTQ, and sex-based discrimination in many different settings. She used art and technology to express herself in those early years – sketching portraits of people who inspired her and designing web pages for different causes.

Her love of art and social change led her to graduate with a Political Science B.A. and Art History minor. After graduating, Dione moved to Houston and began organizing city of Houston workers. While organizing, she was introduced to communications as a career option that could combine organizing, the arts, and her love of technology.

For more than a decade, Dione has worked with nonprofits to provide strategic communications direction and support with planning, digital media, and traditional media. She has led many campaigns at the local, state, and national level that have helped address injustice across a myriad of issues including LGBTQ rights, immigrants’ rights, justice system reform, youth rights, and abortion rights.
