Wellness

Stress has been classified as the health epidemic of the 21st century, according to the World Health Organization. We are experiencing exhaustion, burnout, and decision fatigue at a dizzying rate. According to the American Psychological Association, more than a quarter of U.S. adults are reporting that they are so stressed out that they cannot even function.

The culture in politics and advocacy has long ignored and underinvested in the well-being of advocates, leaders and organizers who are essential to the progressive movement – even before the pandemic. Today, the entire way we prioritize, conduct, and collaborate on our work together has shifted. It’s forced us all to take stock and re-evaluate our choices and priorities. And we’re not going back to the old ways of doing things.

Maurice Mitchell has a recent ground-breaking piece: Building Resilient Organizations, about the need to detoxify the internal workings of progressive organizations. Dismantling systemic, corrupt, and racist institutions, battling to maintain a strong and inclusive democracy, combating the ever-widening inequality gap, and additional existential threats like the rise in fascism, irreversible climate challenges, and an unrelenting pandemic, have made doing our work together in organizations harder than ever.

From quiet quitting to the great resignation, people are making new and different choices. The world of advocacy, politics, and philanthropy must also adapt and make new choices, if we hope to recruit, build, and retain a progressive base and workforce of allies to help us win.

NEWCO Labs is working to redefine this culture to help better train managers and to meet the needs of the people and organizations who make up our movement. Workplaces help shape wellbeing every day – for better or for worse. We want to help you slow burnout, exhaustion, and the revolving door through building a stronger culture of wellness. We need a sustainable pipeline of talent and leadership that can withstand an ever evolving political environment, and create space for stronger thinkers, innovators, and leaders. We must encourage wellness and grow resilience in people and organizations to build durable progressive power.

Through our Wellness trainings we lay the groundwork for both leadership and teams who cannot afford to ignore an outdated culture and are ready to strengthen their work and community.
